L wrote his own name so he would die in 23 days–the maximum time that a death can occur after the name is written.

Since a death note had then determined when L would die, Rem’s death note would not take effect. The first death note overruled the second. When L saw Watari die on the video screen, he realized that Rem had written his name, and pretended to die. This fooled Light into incriminating himself on the surveillance footage in the building, not knowing it was an act.

Although the movies were not very well-directed, I liked the endings. Naomi was handled cleverly in the first movie, and the second movie’s ending is an improvement on the original. It leaves out the Near/Mello arc, which was far less creative and fun than the L arc. It takes advantage of the Death Note’s Rules in a clever way. It develops L’s character as he is willing to die. L going after Misa without the knowledge of Light/Rem was quite practical. Finally, I like that Light loses due to his own mistakes, and not Mikami’s.
